Culturally Responsive Pedagogies
Faculty Workshops — RSVP now
Pratt’s Center for Teaching and Learning (https://prattctl.com/), in collaboration with Daniel Lim Consulting (https://dlimconsulting.com/), announces a new faculty workshop series this Fall 2019 semester around culturally responsive teaching practices. All workshops are co-facilitated by Daniel Lim and Judit Török.
Goals:
Participants in the Culturally Responsive Pedagogies workshops will learn:
- How to create classroom/studio interactions for diverse group of learners;
- Culturally appropriate terminology to refer to people of different social and identity groups;
- How to create productive learning environments for students that come from different educational systems/cultures, including international students;
- Different approaches to inclusive syllabus design;
- Strategies for being appropriately responsive to students from different racial, cultural, gender, sexual and ability backgrounds.
Faculty participants will learn currently accepted terminology for referring to people of different social and identity groups. They will learn specific pedagogical approaches to addressing classroom/studio interactions defined by racial, cultural, gender, and other forms of difference.This workshop is standardized, pre-scheduled, and open to all faculty members across campus. Faculty participants will work with faculty peers from other departments and programs, and learn generalized strategies applicable to all disciplines and learning environments.

Participation: All Pratt faculty and staff are welcome to attend this free event, sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).
Part time/Visiting faculty qualify for a stipend if they attend one of the workshops. Stipend paperwork will be processed at the end of the workshop.
RSVP is required, light snacks will be served.
Department-Specific Workshops are also available
Goals: On the department-specific track, CTL will work with your department to design workshops tailored to the department’s needs, goals, and interests.
Topics: We currently offer the following three workshops.
Topic 1: Identity and cultural competency. Faculty participants will learn currently accepted terminology for referring to people of different social and identity groups. They will learn specific pedagogical approaches to addressing classroom/studio interactions defined by racial, cultural, gender, and other forms of difference.
Topic 2: Intercultural educational practice. Faculty participants will learn to reflect on their own educational tradition and learn strategies for creating a productive learning environment for students who might come from different educational systems, such as international students.
Topic 3: Multicultural and inclusive classroom/studio and syllabus design. Faculty participants will learn a variety of approaches to designing a classroom/studio environment and syllabus that is inclusive and culturally responsive to students from different racial, cultural, gender, sexual, and ability backgrounds.
